DoF is awesome, but I'm glad I started in real-world manual SLR photography, where DoF simply can't be ignored. It's just right here (the eyes usually being the place where you need sharp focus).

In Octane, in my opinion, the other thing that is really useful is understanding (again from real-world manual photography) the concept of white-point. I sometimes spend ages playing with different white-points to suit the colour temperature of the lights. I'm not sure its even obvious to other people, but I obsess about it. I also sometimes wonder, when one models' skin has a different colour cast to the others, if the person who created the textures wasn't working on a colour-calibrated monitor.
